Repair Runway 01/19

Client: United States Air Force

Location: Dover Air Force Base, DE

Contract Value: $20,162,000

Project Duration: September 2014 to August 2017

Dover Air Force Base serves as a key strategic airlift hub for the U.S. Air Force and is home to the 436th Airlift Wing. This Design-Bid-Build project involved the full demolition and reconstruction of Runway 01/19 and associated taxiways. The project aimed to improve the reliability, safety, and longevity of the airfield infrastructure, including upgrades to airfield lighting systems, navigational aids (NAVAIDs), and instrument landing systems. Despite the complexity and scale of the work, the airfield remained operational throughout the duration of the project.

Atlantic Electric, LLC served as the electrical subcontractor to Versar, Inc. and performed the full replacement of the airfield lighting systems across the 9,600-foot runway. Scope included demolition of all fixtures, transformers, and wiring; installation of new centerline, touchdown zone, edge lighting, snowplow rings, sign foundations, and wind cones; concrete placements; and reinstallation of guard lights. Atlantic also installed over 180 new airfield signs, multiple light bars and flasher systems, MG-20 and MG-30 LIR towers, 93,000 LF of 15kV cabling, 186 precast manholes/handholes, and new ductbanks with associated grounding and counterpoise. Vault work included new ADB switchgear regulators, interface cabinets, and modifications to the ALCMS, along with upgrades to the Glide Slope, Localizer, and PAPI systems.
