MCAS New River Airfield Lighting Replacement

Client: United States Marine Corps

Location: Marine Corps Air Station, New River, NC

Contract Value: $10,570,000

Project Duration: October 2019 to May 2021

Marine Corps Air Station New River provides critical flight operations support to Camp Lejeune and the II Marine Expeditionary Force. The installation operates two primary runways, Runway 01-19 and Runway 05-23, serving as a vital aviation hub for the Marine Corps. Prior to this project, the airfield’s lighting infrastructure relied on three aging vaults and outdated lighting fixtures, wiring, and control systems, requiring modernization to maintain mission readiness.

Atlantic Electric, LLC served as the airfield lighting subcontractor to Woodstone Energy, LLC for the design-build replacement of MCAS New River’s airfield lighting systems. The project consolidated the three existing lighting vaults into a new centralized lighting vault with two switchgear regulator control systems. In support of the vault consolidation, Atlantic Electric installed a new junction plaza duct bank system, including over 40 junction can plazas and more than 30,000 feet of new duct bank. The project also included a fiber optic cable connection between the vault and tower and the replacement of the existing PLC-based control system with a new PC-based control system. Throughout construction, Atlantic Electric successfully maintained operational status on at least one runway at all times, ensuring uninterrupted airfield operations.
