Runway 05-23 Pavement and Airfield Lighting Rehab
Pope Army Airfield is home to the 43rd Air Mobility Command, which supports rapid deployment for the Joint Special Operations Command and the 82nd Airborne Division. Runway 05-23 serves as the airfield’s sole runway, handling approximately 33,000 operations per year. To eliminate ongoing maintenance disruptions associated with aging asphalt, the entire runway was scheduled for full demolition and reconstruction using Portland cement concrete within a 120-day window.
Atlantic Electric, LLC served as the airfield lighting subcontractor to R.C. Construction Co. and Millstone Weber, a Joint Venture. Atlantic’s scope included the installation of new runway edge conduit, light cans, LED edge lights, two new 49-light Air Force-style threshold bars, and a complete LED ALSF-1 approach lighting and sequence flashing system. Additional upgrades included a new duct bank and junction plaza system, full renovation of the existing lighting vault, installation of a new L-890 airfield lighting control and monitoring system, and two new switchgear regulator systems. Despite the fast-paced schedule, all electrical work was completed in coordination with the airfield’s critical operations.
